The next day, I thought about going to Fox Lake swimming but knew what the crowd would be like on a weekend. The campers alone would take up all the beach space.

My yard needed a lot of work, and I had not done anything with the fishpond. Maybe if I cleaned and filled it I could get some goldfish. I went out to look at the pond. A foot of dirty water and decaying leaves stood in it.

Using some wading boots and rubber work gloves I found in the basement, I started bailing out the water with an old pail. When the pond at last looked clean, I got the garden hose and began filling it.

After supper, when the pond wasn’t full, I shut off the water, planning to finish it the next day. From an end table I picked up a copy of Astronomy magazine I’d brought with me from Milwaukee and sat down to look up what would be in the sky for observing that evening. It would be dark in less than a half hour, so I gathered up my sky watching supplies and went out to the MGB.

As I drove through town and neared her real estate office, Laura came out and opened the door of her car parked in front. She saw me and waved. I pulled over behind her car.

I thought about asking her to join me. “Hi, are you finally done working for the day?”

“I wish I was. I have to do some more paperwork. Were you at Velma’s funeral today?”

“Yes, Sally and I were there. I saw Velma’s son and wanted to ask him about that murder years ago, but of course, it wasn’t the appropriate time or place. Maybe I should try to see him before he leaves town.”

“I imagine he will eventually sell the house and be here off and on for quite a while. Right now might not be a good time.”

“I guess I’d better not bother him.” It embarrassed me to think that I had considered it.

Laura shifted her briefcase to the other hand. “You know, Jen, if you want some help with your investigation, maybe I could talk to some of the other agents. We have some old timers who might remember something, but I’ll have to wait for the right moment. I could start with June. She has a daughter who would have been in high school when that happened. Maybe even in Sherry Jensen’s class.”

“That would be great. Something interesting might turn up. I don’t know why this old case intrigues me.” I smiled. “Maybe I don’t have enough to do.” I looked up at the sky. “I’d better let you go. Oh, did Sally call you about golf next Tuesday?”

Laura smiled. “Yes, I told her I would love it. Lately, it seems all I do is work.”

We said goodbye, and I drove out of town along the river road and then out into the country where the farms were far apart and the sky dark.
